Spotlight on Sun Rot by Matt Ross (@totally_not_panicking)

This week, I’m planning to run a game of Sun Rot by Matt Ross, and I am WICKED excited. Sun Rot exists in a strange, foggy space between a tabletop role-playing game and a skirmish game. It’s light on rules but heavy on atmosphere, creativity, and chaos.

In the game, players embark on a desperate quest to escape a dying world where the Sun itself has revolted, puking weird chaos upon the world. Guided by a GM, your group must search for shards to activate a portal before the world—and the creatures crawling out of the void—tear you apart.

Gameplay is fast and intuitive:

1. Move.
2. Take an action (roll 1d6—4 or higher succeeds).
3. Flip a card to see what unfolds.

Every ten minutes, an event card is revealed, and all chaos breaks loose again. The entire experience takes about an hour, making it an intense and memorable session that rewards creativity and improvisation.

Beyond the gameplay, what truly makes Sun Rot stand out is its philosophy: anything goes. I love Matt’s approach to rulings- “What do you think happens?” is commonly asked of the players when something happens that is not in the very brief (that’s a good thing) rulebook. The Sun Rot community on Discord is wildly creative, sharing kitbashed miniatures and boards that look like they’ve stepped straight out of a Hieronymus Bosch painting—grotesque, imaginative, and utterly captivating.

Matt Ross himself is an incredible artist and a strong advocate for using oil paints in miniature art. You can explore his techniques and tutorials on his YouTube channel: @totally_not_panicking.

I had the pleasure of meeting Matt at Under the Dice Fest this year and joining one of his demos. The experience was so unforgettable that I immediately got a Sun Rot-inspired tattoo at the booth next door. That’s how much the game resonated with me.

If you’re looking for a one-hour experience filled with tension, art, and apocalyptic imagination, Sun Rot is absolutely worth your time.

Play Top Secret with Jayson at GaelCon in Dublin

GaelCon 37 is just days away in Dublin, Ireland. It’s October 24th – 27th.

This will be the first year for Solarian Games to attend, and we can’t wait. Jayson Elliot, co-author of the newest edition of Top Secret®, will be at GaelCon running his original mission Kompromat.

In Kompromat, the players  are secret agents on a highly sensitive mission in Istanbul, to stop a Turkish general from being compromised by Russian intelligence.

If you’re in Ireland, please come and say hi. Jayson doesn’t know anyone there yet!

First-ever videogame champion, legendary programmer, and Interplay co-founder Rebecca Heineman is fundraising to deal with the costs of an aggressive cancer diagnosis.

Rebecca became the first national videogame champion in 1980 when she won the Space Invaders tournament in New York. She went on to a storied career in gaming, founding Interplay, the studio that created the legendary video game The Bard’s Tale.

Heineman began treatment and diagnostics following PAX West this year, and is set to start chemotherapy for cancer in her lungs and liver. Parts of Heineman’s treatment are covered by insurance, but she is also liable for overwhelming bills from out-of-network treatment.
