This is the 2nd year for the Golden Fez awards, our annual tabletop RPG awards honoring game designer James Carpio. Held in conjunction with TotalCon, the awards will be given out at the convention on Saturday, February 21st.

Submit your own game, or nominate someone else’s game that you love. Awards are open to any tabletop role-playing game published in 2025, from the largest publishers to the smallest indie press. 

Last year, the Game of the Year award was won by Outgunned from Free League Publishing. Award categories include:

• The Holy Hand Grenade Award

  • Given for best new game mechanic.

• The Pick Up and Play Award

  • Easiest game to learn.

• The Velvet Smooth Award

  • For best design and production.
• The Everlasting Fun Factory Award
  • This award is given to a game that was published prior to the current judging year. It is for the enduring classics as well as the hidden gems from the past.

• The Hack the Planet Award

  • Presented to the most unexpected idea. Originality in any form, whether it’s rules, setting, design, or anything else.

• The Bucket of Blood Award

  • Best combat rules
• The Golden Fez Game of the Year

Heyo! What’s up everyone? I am excited to finally share with you an RPG resource created by Arcane Comrade Ben of Empty Castle Press. It’s called Quest Giver! 

I’ll let Ben Explain; “Each of the 36 quests, adventure seeds, rumors, jobs, or campaign starters, all include a small background, a monetary reward, and a randomized list of complications, so even if you run the same scenario twice, it won’t always be the same. While written with OSR/BX games in mind (‘cause that’s my jam), they are broadly system-neutral, allowing for Quest Giver to be used in any medieval fantasy styled adventure game. I’ll have handmade printed copies available for sale at ArcaneCon, but if you’re itching to check it out now (or need some last-minute prep for your game session) it’s newly available on DriveThruRPG”

This product emerged from a discussion about how awesome Traveller is, and that one of my favorite RPG products is 76 Patrons for Traveller. So after I gave Ben an extra copy of 76 Patrons, he cranked out this fantastic resource inspired by it. I’ve been sitting on my copy for a while now, eager to share this and now it’s finally available on DriveThruPRG and print copies will be available at ArcaneCon THIS WEEKEND! Woah! Nosferatu 

It’s Orlok if you’re nasty. 

Finally, last week, ahead of Halloween, I had the privilege of seeing Nosferatu accompanied by the fabulous We Used To Cut The Grass Orchestra. It was easily one of the coolest experiences I have ever been a part of. 

With the continued flood of AI tomfoolery, it is more important than ever to experience human artistic interactions. I cannot express to you, Dear Reader, how full* my heart was and how my brain was firing on all cylinders as I left the brewery. It was yet another reminder of why I love creating weirdo outsider art and the power it has to bring people together. 

While many of you may not be from my ancestral home of New Jersey, and cannot make it to Alternate Ending for an event, I can only imagine there are places all across the country doing something similar with other classic films. Seek these places out. Go to them. You will be glad you did. 

*My belly was also full thanks to the three-course meal, which was superb. My compliments to the chef.

Congratulations to the first Get Haunted Industries zine scholarship recipient, Paul of Cthulhu. He is a 15-year-old burgeoning writer who is best friends with my son. GHI provided the printing funds, and he did the hard work! The Zine he wrote, Beezelbub Hubbub, is an off the rails fever dream of satanic panic, cyborg vampires, and other gems only a crazy teenager could dream up. He’s got talent.

Beezelbub has come to Fairhaven! Local children report being taken to Mt. Smoky and witnessing Satanic Rites during Boys and Girls club meetings. The children are unharmed but must undergo hypnosis to remember the events witnessed. Reverend Zebulon Gemstone has taken to his 8 a.m. Public Access spot to disseminate news about the case. His show “Infected with Jesus!” quickly shoots to the top of the charts. Are there truly demons in Fairhaven, or is something more sinister afoot?

Whassup! I hope everyone has had a great week! 

I’ve been pretty busy now that we’re in the home stretch to ArcaneCon 2025! Early registration has officially closed, but walk-ins are welcome! Anyways, I would like to promote off the back of the Wildrendrem Vol. 2 The Saintly Hollow Kickstarter I mentioned a few weeks ago! Jedediah Berry and Andy McAlpine from Phantom Mill have released a FREE product to tie into their Wildendrem campaign called Rere Regardant; Five Character Backrgrounds for Wildendrem

These backgrounds include the following backgrounds to be used alongside your OSE, Cairn, or other OSR-related games:

• Ruined Noble

• Itinerant Astronomist

• Quixotic Knight (my personal favorite!)

• Conclave Novitiate

• Knightless Squire

Each of these backgrounds include two D6 tables per background to help flesh out their character. For example, the Ruined Noble has the table “What was the cause of your House’s Downfall?” and “What Scrap of Your Inheritance Did You Save?” Great stuff! On top of that, each background will provide recommended character classes to use for these characters. To top it all off, each background is beautifully illustrated by Amanda Lee Franck to really help sell the vibes of the characters. Great Stuff!

This week, we’re not promoting anything of ours. Instead, we’d like to help a cause we believe in and hope you will too.

We’re in the last days to help build the ultimate memorial gaming table for the fans of Dungeons & Dragons. Dedicated to Gary Gygax, the co-creator of the game, in the place where it was written and published, his hometown of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. This Kickstarter, run by Paul Stormberg of the Gygax Memorial Fund, is getting close but still needs some help crossing the finish line. We’ve got until Fri, October 31 at 1:00 PM EDT. Please consider sharing and/or donating anything you can because our industry deserves a monument to its founding and this is such a cool way to do it.

We at Solarian Games would love to see this thing come together, and maybe one day play a game with one of you at the table, with Gary.

A doomsday cult is plotting to destroy the world, and only ICON can stop them.

Our October Patreon is full of goodies for Top Secret, and we’ve embraced the season by coloring them all in a little darkness. Nothing supernatural, but definitely disturbing. It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The leaves are turning, the wind is picking up, and The Red Lobster is now draped in an orange banner declaring itself a Spirit Halloween Store. Halloween is right around the corner so let’s get ready NOW! 

The Halloween RPG market is a lot of quantity over quality, so I let me present to you a couple of surefire hits for your table by certified creative masterminds. 

Treat #1- Night Thirst by Wittle Goblin

Not only is Wittle Goblin and inspiring streamer and overall awesome soul, Witty nails the actual gaming end of the hobby with Night Thirst. Night Thirst is a tabletop vampire showdown where you and up to five friends compete to drink the most blood before sunrise. It’s like when me and my Pizza Pals go to Luigi’s Spaghetti Buffet on Tuesday Nights, but its Type O Negative instead of fettucine alfredo. 

Each vampire has unique powers, and while you’re sneaking, scheming, and biting your way through a tiny 3×3 grid, the secretive S.T.A.K.E. agents are watching, ready to take out anyone getting too reckless. It’s chaotic, strategic, and full of that delicious “vampires doing vampire things” energy—miniatures, dice, and mayhem included.

Treat #2- Oldest Child by Justin Sirios, Severed Games

Justin Sirois is as kind as he is creative. Personally, he inspires me with his prolific output of high quality gaming products. Oldest Child ranks high on my recent “Holy Cow! This is absolutely mind-blowing!” list of out-of-the-coffin game design. 

Oldest Child is this strange, beautiful game where you spend three years in the life of a sick vampire named Lyda, making impossible choices month by month. Every card flips the story in unexpected ways, and there’s no winning—just decisions, consequences, and a creeping sense of guilt mixed with dark humor. It’s intimate, weird, and kind of haunting, like you’re peeking into a life you’ll never forget, all while reflecting on your own messy human decisions. It’s seeping in folk-horror dread and the art is CHEF’S KISS. Justin is equally talented as a visual artist as he is a writer and game designer.

Both of these inspiring creatures of the night will be on the Halloween edition of Joey Royale’s Pizza Party on Wednesday Oct. 15 at 8:00 EST. Check it out and fangs for the support!

What’s up everyone! This week, I’d like to shine a spotlight on Flames of Orion! My friend Steve from the Under The Dice hobby zine and the Hive Scum Podcast created one of my favorite tabletop miniature games and I really want to share it with all of you! It’s everything I wanted from a mech-based tabletop game! It’s easy to pick up and play, minimal crunch, and you can play it intuitively. Games are FAST and explosive (literally!) if you’ve ever been mech-curious, this is a fantastic entry point!

Hello friends! I have some very exciting news I’d love to share! Our friends Jed & Andy from Phantom Mill Games have announced the followup to their silver Ennie Award winning setting, Valley fo Flowers; Wildendrem vol. 1! Phantom Mill has announced their next kickstarter to release The Saintly Hollow: Wildendrem Volume 2 and The Wildendrem Codex!

What is Wildendrem? They describe it as “an Arthurian world gone strange.” I don’t know about you, but that’s enough for me to check it out!

What I’m excited for is that it will continue the structure of Valley of Flowers by including both OSE and Cairn stats so you can easily use it for your preferred game system! What is extra cool about this is that Arcane Comrade Eon has started creating artwork for RPGs in the past year and i’m very excited that he is providing art for this fantastic project;

Finally, Phantom Mills will be running a session from their upcoming kickstarter at ArcaneCon! Plus, they will be vending at the convention! So please come on down and hang out with them! The kickstarter launches on October 14th, check it out!

Dear Fellow Travellers, I come to bring news of a convention in western Massachusetts called ArcaneCon! A convention that celebrates indie games within the old-school, new school, and other schools! Some fellow union folks will be there running games! 

In the lead up to the event, I’ll be providing some stand out games I’m excited to see at the convention this year! For my first article, I’d like to point everyone towards Barrows & Borderlands: 

Now THIS is a landmark of a game, taking influence from the less appreciated corners of Original D&D and giving it some OSR flavor to make it feel like original D&D from an alternative universe. It’s everything I like from the landmark booklets from 1974, but plussed up by leaning into the more weirdo elements that inspired the game. Everything from the layout, fonts used, original artwork and even the boxset you can purchase is a masterpiece. This game is a celebration of OD&D and the weirder parts that seem to get overlooked (Dinosaurs! Psionics! Rayguns!) that have unfortunately been pushed aside. There is even an original map inspired by the wilderness survival board game (as a separate product!) I’m extremely excited to have the creator driving all the way up to ArcaneCon to run the game. And in true OD&D fashion, his player cap is 10 players! So if you’re looking for something to play Saturday Afternoon at the convention, look no further than Barrows & Borderlands!
